The Power of One Person Opening a Door for Someone Else
I often think back to the early days of Way Down Yonder.
There was a time when we were simply working for corporate America, working from home, holding a dream with a recipe, a vision, and a desire to serve our community. We had the passion and were willing to do the work, but like many entrepreneurs, we needed someone to believe in us enough to give us a chance.
Someone opened a door.
It wasn't just about providing a space or an opportunity; it was about trusting us with something we hadn't yet proven. That single act gave us the chance to introduce people to our authentic food, our culture, and our purpose.
That opportunity given changed everything.
Over time, Way Down Yonder became much bigger than us. We weren't just serving savory dishes, beignets and coffee anymore. We were creating jobs, partnering with organizations, mentoring young people, training employees, helping aspiring entrepreneurs, and encouraging people to believe that they, too, could build something meaningful in real time.
Without realizing it, we began opening doors for others.
As our mission grew, we realized it was never meant to stop with one person. It was meant to reach many. But we also learned that expanding opportunities comes with a cost. Every new person you invest in requires more time, more resources, more systems, and more responsibility. Sometimes that cost is greater than your budget, greater than your capacity, and greater than what you ever imagined.
Looking back, I understand something I didn't fully appreciate then: every opportunity carries a responsibility.
When someone opens a door for you, it's not meant to stop with you.
It's meant to continue.
The challenge is making sure you build the right foundation in the beginning, so that opening doors for others doesn't come at the expense of your own ability to keep them open.
The greatest gift you can give someone isn't simply a handout. It's a chance. A skill. A connection. A belief that they are capable of more than they can currently see for themselves.
That's the heart of the Way Down Yonder Legacy Foundation.
We exist because we know what it feels like for someone to believe in you. We also know what it feels like to face setbacks, lose opportunities, and have to rebuild.
Those experiences have only strengthened our commitment to helping others.
Our goal isn't simply to prepare people for a job.
It's to equip them with knowledge, confidence, practical skills, and a vision for ownership, so that one day they can become the person who opens the next door.
Because that's how real change happens.
One opportunity.
One person.
One open door.
And then another.
Legacies aren't built by what we keep for ourselves.
